Grand Haven, Michigan (November 13, 2017) – There is no correlation between the age of the office employee and a higher pain level. So says the updated study information released by Atlas Injury Prevention Solutions , the industry-leading injury prevention and management service and technology provider.
The Atlas white paper, Office Ergonomics Trends Part I Update: Relationship between Employee Demographics and Discomfort, not only reveals the lack of any correlation between age and pain levels, but also uncovers new data regarding pain and the employee population.
The study measured the activities of a high-risk population—heavy computer users. In addition to the amount of time employees spent on the computer, Atlas found three surprising factors that influence pain levels: higher body mass index (BMI), height, and hand size. Specifically, employees who have any one or a combination of these factors experience more discomfort on the job than those who do not.
“What’s most surprising is that gender is not a leading indicator for increase in pain,” says Jim Landsman, president of Atlas. “In this study, and our original study in 2008, data show that while many female employees are more inclined toward discomfort, the causes are not gender-specific but rather the criteria discovered proved correlative in all users.”
Following the same study methodology as the 2008 study, Atlas’ updated results represent an expanded view of pain across 26,469 employees from a bigger demographic who work in a wide range of industries.
“Both studies reveal that the correlations employers should be looking at are not the ones traditionally considered indicative of future discomfort or pain issues,” says Landsman. “Instead, employers should be looking for ways to prevent or alleviate discomfort based on these new findings.”
