Grand Haven, Michigan (November 23, 2020) – The attitudes toward wellness programs are evolving within the transportation industry.  What was once a topic for the “fringes” is clearly becoming more mainstream.  Atlas Injury Prevention Solutions (Atlas IPS) is pleased to announce its Executive Vice President, Drew Bossen, will present concerning trends regarding transportation employees’ health and wellness at the 2020 Safety, Security and Human Resources National Virtual Conference, November 30 to December 4, 2020.

Over the past 30 years Drew has worked with companies across the country, large and small, providing highly effective solutions to combat work-related injuries and improve employee wellness.  At the virtual conference, Drew will present a session titled “Wellness... Lessons Learned from Over 100,000 Employee Responses” on November 30, 2020, at 1:00PM Eastern.

Historically, very little data has existed on the transportation population to draw specific recommendations as the employee population shifts between one demographic to another. With such a diverse population in age, gender, and overall health condition, Atlas IPS saw the need and started collecting data over several years, tracking trends and reviewing results of transportation employees’ health and wellness.

Drew’s presentation will draw upon a large data set of over 100,000 transportation employees and will review several significant findings including:

  • Musculo-Skeletal Health (Sprains & Strains) and how the demographics of our population impact the outcomes of this measure.
  • Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) Health: a cluster of conditions including increased blood pressure (hypertension), high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist (waist circumference), and abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels — that occur together.  Individuals who have a combination of 3 or more of these factors have an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.  Drew will review the impact of MetS within the transportation industry.
  • Finally, Drew will discuss the impact of ongoing Wellness Coaching as a means to achieve sustainable outcomes within the population.

“Today, our nation is fast approaching a state where 70% of the population will be considered overweight or obese,” says Drew Bossen.  “As we study the relationship between obesity, the prevalence of related health issues, and the associated costs of chronic disease, it is clear the transportation industry is facing a monumental challenge.  Understanding the implications of a ‘well’ workforce is vital in developing a safe and productive workforce; ignoring the implications can be very costly to an organization.”
