Grand Haven, Michigan (December 10, 2018) – Truck drivers continue to have one of the highest injury incidence rates according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With this in mind, Atlas Injury Prevention Solutions (www.atlas-ips.com) has produced a white paper further exploring the root causes of this problem by looking at how material handling impacts driver discomfort, an early indicator of a potential injury.

The white paper, Relationship Between Material Handling, Demographics, and Discomfort in the Transportation Industry, looks at data provided by 102,749 drivers from 2008-2017 and expands upon the research of the demographics and discomfort-focused white paper released in September.

The paper segments drivers into three groups—those who do not touch freight, who touch lighter freight more frequently, and who touch heavier freight less frequently.  It compares those work configurations with driver height, BMI, and age to identify where higher levels of discomfort are exhibited.  The paper concludes with recommended solutions to minimize discomfort and injury risk.

“This study provided some unexpected outcomes and does a good job helping us understand driver discomfort and related injury risk in more depth,” according to Brian Briggs, Atlas physical therapist and researcher. “By doing so, fleets who handle freight can focus resources on more effective solutions.”
