Grand Haven, Michigan (February 26, 2018) – Advocating a shift in perspective when addressing musculoskeletal work injuries in the newly hired, Atlas Injury Prevention Solutions' expert Curt DeWeese will present an alternative method of reducing injury in his presentation before the Indiana Chamber Safety and Health Conference and Expo. The conference will be held March 12-13 at the Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis.

DeWeese will introduce attendees to a legally defensible post-offer pre-employment (POPE) physical function screening method proven to significantly reduce injury risk with new hires. Attendees will be shown the process required to create a legally compliant program, and how these programs will reduce injury frequency, lost time and associated costs.

With over 25 years of experience in treating work related musculoskeletal injuries and working onsite with safety professionals in manufacturing, transportation, healthcare and office environments, DeWeese has designed successful injury prevention programs, including early intervention, education, job demand and ergonomics analysis, and workstation design.

“In physically demanding work environments, safety professionals need to include a focus on the worker,” says DeWeese. “Ensuring new employees can safely perform essential job functions is critical. The relationship is simple; a new worker who cannot has higher injury risk.”

The presentation will also include a case study that outlines the process taken and the outcomes and cost savings. “Musculoskeletal work related injuries occurring within the first 18 months of hire is a frustrating situation for all,” says DeWeese. “Our goal is to help safety professionals create a compliant physical screening process that identifies the workers’ ability to perform essential job functions, keeping them safe on the job.
