Only the Facts: What does MSD injury data from 50 worksites tell us about first aid, proactive services, and the aging workforce?
Brian Briggs, Atlas Training Manager, PT
Tuesday, November 8, 2022, 3:10 pm – 4:00 pm

When employees experience musculoskeletal discomfort or musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s), the historical employer response has varied from reactive services like emergency rooms visits, to more proactive steps including early intervention or industrial athlete programs, pre-shift stretching, new employee training, job site coaching, ergonomics, etc.

While there is strong momentum to implement early intervention/industrial athlete programs, a key question is whether or not there is a real impact.  In short, what does the data say?

This presentation will take an in-depth look at the data accrued at over 50 industrial worksites throughout the US and Canada over the past 5 years. Comparisons will be made between programs based on their use of reactive first aid measures, preventative measures, and a combination of both. The presentation will further investigate the impact employee age has on the outcomes of a program.  Results will be considered based on avoidance of need for medical referral and the site’s TRIR.

Briggs is a 20-year industry veteran in preventing, managing, and treating work-related musculoskeletal injuries in the distribution, manufacturing, and office environments.

Best in Class: L3Harris Technologies and the Integration of First Aid Care and Ergonomics
Curt DeWeese, Atlas Director, PT
Thursday, November 10, 2022, 9:00 am – 9:50 am

MSD’s continue to drive injury costs for employers.  If soft tissue stressors are not corrected, first aid and medical care may not be effective as any gains obtained are lost as the employee returns to their job tasks.  Ergonomic corrections can be the key to removing stressors leading to soft tissue discomfort or injury.

L3Harris Technologies Communications Systems originally had an onsite healthcare provider who significantly reduced the number of musculoskeletal reportable claims simply with OSHA approved first aid.  As the program evolved, the EHS Team and the healthcare provider began a deeper review of job demands and posture data, analyzing and prioritizing ergonomic risk, and developing and tracking corrective solutions.

What had been viewed historically as a successful injury prevention program, achieved record results.  This presentation will review the integrated approach utilizing the strengths of the disciplines of healthcare and ergonomics.  Learn how the L3Harris EHS Team broke down tasks, analyzed and prioritized ergonomic risk, develop solutions, and tracked implementation.  Review the benefits realized through an integrated approach, including the cost avoidance related to claim frequency and severity.

DeWeese is a 30-year industry veteran in preventing, managing, and treating work-related musculoskeletal injuries in the distribution, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, and office environments.

Atlas IPS will also be exhibiting at booth #307.
